“The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman” — Malcolm X

I hope every person reading this will channel the energy of Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks and say: “Nah. Not today.”

Dear Black women: You’re long overdue these roses.

You are the heart that holds families together.

Like my Great Aunt Debbie.

Deborah Jefferson — family matriarch

If you’ve ever seen Big Momma’s house, that’s my Aunt Debbie. She expressed love through cooking and that always brought our family together. I marvel at how she never had an empty house because she was always raising kids, whether they were her own or another family members.

When it comes to the family matriarch, nobody plays that role better than a Black woman.

Dear Black women: You’re long overdue these roses.

You are the spirit that feeds my soul.

Like my sister Afua.
