Thanksgiving has taken some heat from social justice warriors who denounce the holiday’s origins and the whitewashed, myth-riddled retelling of said origins. It’s a valid perspective.

Yet, even while acknowledging this valid perspective, I can’t deny my reverence for Thanksgiving; it’s a reverence steeped in a deep appreciation for spending time with family/friends/loved ones and the expression of gratitude. As such, I feel compelled to share the benefits for social justice warriors to utilize this holiday to engage in these aspects.

Gratitude is the foundation of happiness

“Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.” — Joseph Addison

We should utilize Thanksgiving as a reminder of our need to express gratitude. Especially considering the relationship between gratitude and happiness.

If you have the privilege of health or an able body, express gratitude for all these allow you to do. If you have someone to love (platonically or romantically), express gratitude for that person’s presence in your life. If you have something to be hopeful for, express gratitude for what that does for you.
